I have spent years developing my speaking business. It was born of my love for the stage, but I had a rude awakening. At first, I tried to break into the field as a professional speaker in the area of sales. That was my background. I was good at sales. It seemed that there was very little about sales that I didn’t know. I worked for a multi-billion dollar company who offered the best sales training in the industry. Stepping out on my own to share my knowledge made perfect sense. It was a logical first step. I began creating my sales message and materials and got my name out wherever I could think of, but to my surprise, I found when you search for sales speakers, millions of links come up. It turns out that the field of professional sales speakers is overcrowded. It was a HUGE pond with a lot of really tiny fish being gobbled up by the few big ones.
Finally, in 1996, my first breast cancer diagnosis changed my world. It gave me the message I was looking for and thus began an entirely new chapter in my life.
I’ve had a lot of training along the way, first with Toastmasters, which is a great place to start, but most clubs are not really geared toward producing professional speakers. I stress MOST, in that there are a few professional Toastmasters Clubs that target professional speakers, but some require that you are already at that level before you join.
There are other organizations that train speakers, in some cases, those training programs cater to people who sell a product, and need to become proficient at it. They will charge you a huge fee to teach you how to get invited to speak either for free, or YOU PAY THEM to be on their stage, and what’s in for you is that you get to sell your product. That’s fine if you have an expensive product and one sale will get your money back for you. But what about those of us who ARE the product?
In my searching, I found that there are very few personal training programs that truly mentor people who want to share their inspirational message and experience from the stage and get paid doing it. The first thing I had to figure out was the difference between a motivational speaker and an inspirational speaker. They seem the same, but they are quite different. I can teach you to:
- Understand the difference between motivational and inspirational speaking.
- Craft a speech about your personal journey – one where people will hang on every word.
- Deliver your speech to an audience and shake the nerves.
- Learn where to practice your speech for free, but get something valuable in return.
- Determine when it is time to ask for money…and HOW to ask, and how much to ask for.
- Develop marketing materials with the help of graphics, branding and web experts.
